Encouraging Reports of Serious Interfaith Creativity in the Family

It’s been three weeks since our last regular edition so this is a bit longer but still important.

The first item from the New York Times describes significant counter-attacks by mainstream Muslim clergy against murderous extremists. We have met Sheikh Hamza Yusuf, one the major American leaders.

Then we note the 11th annual joint Israeli-Palestinian commemoration of those lost in the conflict. Suliman Khatib, co-founder of Combatants for Peace and an organizer, is a member of our International Abrahamic Network.

Then we learn how the Arab-Jewish Hand-in-Hand schools in Israel deal with shared political memories.

In the U.S., we see Jews supporting a Congressional initiative to reject any attempts to bar Muslims from entering the country. Representative Don Beyer, the author, is our friend.

The Forward editor, Jane Eisner, then assesses a surprisingly positive opinion survey of Arab youth in the Middle East and North Africa.

Back to Israel, we learn of a multi-ethnic, multi-faith experiment in teaching young Muslims, Christians, and Jews how to live inter-communally. President Rivlin is a cheerleader.

We end with the news of a symbolically significant meeting at the Vatican between Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Cairo’s al-Azhar Mosque, Ahmed Mohamed al-Tayeb.
